Incident: Major Sutton was shot and killed in an apartment in central Bakersfield. His pregnant mother, Johniece Williams, and 5-year-old brother King Smith were wounded. Family members said the boys were dancing and watching videos when two masked men broke into their apartment and opened fire. Major's grandmother said the gunman had the opportunity to realize his targets, and believes they deliberately shot them anyway. Three months after the shooting, police arrested Tyrone Deangelo Johnson, 21, David Reagan Palms, 19, and Myeisha Bernice Dale, 29, on suspicion of murder. In the past 3 years, Johnson has been arrested numerous times -- charged with crimes 12 times. He was arrested 9 days after Major Sutton's murder on gang related charges, but the charges were dropped two days later. Palms has been arrested once before for battery. Dale has one prior charge of drunk disorderly conduct. Bakersfield police have called this a gang related homicide, but they haven't said which gang they believe to be involved. The shooting happened just a few blocks from where 5-year-old Kason Guyton was killed in February. Bakersfield police say there are still no arrests in Kason's case. Incident: A man was killed Saturday night in an officer-involved shooting in South Bakersfield. Authorities haven't released the names of the officer, or the man who was shot. According to Bakersfield Police Department Sgt. Ryan Kroeker, officers stopped a vehicle around 10:45 p.m. Saturday on Planz Road near South H Street. Kroeker said a man, who was in the vehicle, got out and ran. Kroeker said an officer shot the man. He was taken to a local hospital where he died. Police said the man had a gun, but it's unclear if officers were aware of that when the shooting occurred. Kroeker said a gun was recovered at the scene. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The man's identity will be released by the Kern County Coroner's Office. In a release Sunday, the Bakersfield Police Department said the officer who fired his weapon will be placed on administrative leave and the incident will be reviewed by the critical incident review board.

Incident: According to search warrants, multiple witnesses and surveillance video indicate Keon Brackendrige refused to provide an identification while trying to enter the Golden West Casino. When supervisor Richard Iloilo asked Brackenridge to provide an ID or leave, surveillance allegedly shows Brackridge begin to run away, before turning around and firing at Iloilo and another security guard. Security guards returned fire, hitting Brackenridge. Iloilo died at the scene. Brackenridge is charged with first degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He pleaded not guilty. In a jailhouse interview, accused murderer Brackenridge told 17 News he was assaulted by security guards and had been harassed by them before.

Deputies believe the shooting started as an attempted robbery and the two victims met the suspects in the parking lot. A neighbor had surveillance video of the shooting. The camera angle faces outside the home toward the gas station. It appears the suspected gunman runs down the street, followed by the victim's father. You see some sort of interaction between the two men and the suspected gunman again runs off, eventually going back to the gas station and flee the scene. The sheriff's office said deputies on the way to the shooting spotted the suspect vehicle and saw a gun being tossed from it. A man and a woman -- Dante Strong, 20, and Blu Tuch, 21,were detained at a third location -- at Inyo and L Streets. KCSO said those two have since been arrested. Investigators believe Strong shot both victims. The shooting survivor was taken to a hospital with moderate to major injuries. Strong and Tuch have been booked on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, robbery, conspiracy and aggravated mayhem.

According to investigation reports, Christopher Mangham told sheriff's deputies the two had long argued over an affair Mangham had with Ford's wife. Mangham said Ford had previously made violent threats, so Mangham armed himself with a knife and then stabbed Ford during an argument. He told investigators he was acting in self defense when he stabbed Ford. Mangham was initially charged with first-degree murder. He pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter.

The baby was alive when he was taken to the hospital, but BPD said he later died. Martinez was arrested and is charged with two counts of felony child endangerment. BPD says the mother's cousin has not been charged with anything. They believe he was asleep at the time and Martinez was in charge of the kids. Officers have not released the man's name. The two other children are back with their mother. Martinez took a plea deal. She was sentenced to a year in jail. She also had to go through substance abuse treatment and was given five years probation.

According to documents, on July 19, Haynes made good on this threats, shooting up the the store. Ali Ali, who was working at the store, returned fire. Haynes fled the store just as Ali Ali's brother, Tarek Ali, 25, pulled up. Tarek Ali attempted to hit Haynes with his car - and a second gun battle broke out between Haynes and Tarek Ali. The pair shot each other multiple times. Tarek Ali died at the scene. Haynes was rushed to the hospital. Haynes was found with two guns, and a machete like knife. He was wearing a bullet proof vest. Haynes is still hospitalized, but expected to survive. Officers say Haynes will be taken into custody once he's released from the hospital. Tarek Ali's brother was shot to death almost exactly a year prior. Saddam Muslih Ali, 25, was shot and killed on July 16, 2016 on 8th Street in central Bakersfield. Two men have been charged in that case.

Incident: Delano Police Department are investigating the link between a shooting that left one man dead and a high-speed chase in Tulare County. According to police, an officer was in the 1300 block of Clinton Street near Fremont Elementary School when he heard several gunshots. While investigating the area, the officer noticed a white SUV driving down Clinton Street. The police officer attempted a traffic stop but the driver of the SUV failed to stop and led officers on a high speed-chase into Tulare County where officers lost the vehicle. During the pursuit, Delano police responded to a 911 call that a man was shot in the 1300 block of Clinton Street. When officers arrived, they found 28-year-old Diego Morfin suffering from gunshot wounds. The coroners office confirmed Morfin was taken to Delano Regional Medical where he died. The suspect vehicle was occupied by three Hispanic male subjects who are considered armed and dangerous. Delano police said the white SUV was recovered in Tulare County. Sergio Valle was arrested in May 2018 in Mexico. Police are still looking for Rosario Perez.

Incident: The Ridgecrest Police Department identified a man who was shot dead by officers in Ridgecrest as Oscar Junior, 45, of Los Angeles. A 911 call came in at 11:57 a.m. reporting a man running with a gun after threatening people inside a home in the 500 block of South Sunset Street, Ridgecrest police said. At the time, the department was hosting a Street Interdiction Team operation, in which officers from several agencies around the county were participating. A team of officers from the operation was in the area and responded to the scene, police said. Junior pointed a gun at the officers, but continued to run, according to police. Junior then climbed onto a roof in the 400 block of West Haloid Avenue and pointed the gun at officers. Seven officers opened fire on Junior, police said. Six are with the Ridgecrest Police Department, one is a Taft police officer. No officers were injured. The Kern County District Attorney's Office is investigating the shooting. Ridgecrest police said Junior was on active parole with the California Department of Corrections and was not supposed to be in the Ridgecrest area. He also had an extensive criminal history involving felony convictions for firearms violations.

Raymond Rankin, 62, is accused of shooting his former son-in-law, Dustin Johnson, 35, during an argument at an apartment complex on Olive Drive in Oildale. Nick Stokes said Johnson was threatening him over social media. Rankin, his fiance's grandfather, came to Stokes defense. Stokes said Rankin warned Johnson he had a gun and would shoot him. He said Johnson ran toward them and Rankin shot him. Rankin was taken into custody and questioned, but has since been released. Authorities initially said Johnson was expected to survive, but hours later, sheriff's officials say he died during surgery. Family members said Johnson's brother, Trenton Nelson, was stabbed to death in May 2010 during a fight in Oildale.

Incident: Authorities said Brandy Meza was killed in a murder-suicide. The suspected shooter's granddaughter, Naomi Hernandez, said the two were dating. She said her grandfather, Eugene Storer, 71, was completely in love with Meza, 38. Storer and Meza were found in his apartment on 20th Street in downtown Bakersfield. A neighbor reported not seeing Storer for several days and smelling an odor coming from the apartment. Police said the two had been dead for several days and their bodies were decomposed. The coroner determined Meza was shot in the head. Her death was ruled homicide. Storer died of suicide, also a gunshot wound to the head.

Incident: A local doctor said he was defending himself when he shot and killed a man who attacked him inside his office. Dr. Edwin Zong said David Lang claimed to be a new client walked into his northeast Bakersfield office and immediately started beating the doctor. It happened just before 6 p.m. at Oasis Medical Group, not far from Bernard and Alta Vista Streets. Zong told 17 News he thought he was going to die. Police said Zong fired at Lang three times. Lang stumbled out of the office and collapsed in a nearby parking lot, where he died. A witness saw at least part of what happened. Zong said he is a holistic doctor, specializing in natural medicine. He added, he provides prescriptions for medical marijuana to established patients, but does not keep any drugs inside his business. Police said Zong is not expected to be charged.

Incident: Stacy Duke was strangled to death in a south Bakersfield garage. Her brother, Adam Pittman, said Duke lived a short, hard life. Pittman said their mother had four children -- and Duke was born into foster care. He said the four kids never all lived together and they were always in and out of the system because their mother struggled with addiction. Pittman said he last heard from Duke about 4 months ago when she said she was living in Bakersfield with a boyfriend. Pittman said Duke was forced to grow up too fast. She had social media accounts claiming to be 22 years old. Gerardo Rodriguez, 23, is accused of Duke's murder. A search warrant states a witness told police she saw Rodriguez straddling the teen, using one arm to hold her down, and the other to hold a pillow over her face. The warrant said the witness told police the girl wasn't moving when she saw her. It also states the witness told police Rodriguez and Duke dated at one point. Documents state Duke was obviously deceased and there were possible strangulation marks on her neck. It goes on to describe firefighters at the home seeing a shirtless Rodriguez sweating profusely, mumbling "I'm sorry" to himself. Rodriguez was ordered to undergo psychological treatment at a state mental hospital. In October, the District Attorney's office said it could be months before it's determined if he is mentally competent to stand trial. The Department of Justice homicide list states she was killed while the suspect raped her.

Incident: Police were investigating a series of robberies when they found the suspect vehicle. Police said they signaled for the car to pull over, leading to a high-speed chase where the suspect vehicle crashed into a tree. After the crash, Rogelio Landa and another suspected robber, Andrew Crotwell, fled from the car and ran in different directions. Landa was shot and killed. Police said before the vehicle crashed, a gun was thrown from the car. They haven't recovered a weapon, but police found an airsoft gun in the vehicle. Anita Carvajal, 44, was also in the car when the shooting happened. She and Crotwell were both booked on various charges including murder because Landa died during the commission of a felony. The charges were never filed. Landa and Crotwell are accused of robbing a market and a recycling center a few hours before the shooting. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said there was a fugitive warrant out for Landa. They said he was considered a parolee at large. In a jailhouse interview, Rotwell said he and Landa, who he calls Tito, were partners in crime. He said it was their way of making a living. Crotwell said police overreacted when they shot and killed his friend. Officer Spencer Carlson was cleared in the shooting.

Incident: Kristin Goldsberry's body was discovered in a shallow grave in Twin Oaks, east of Bakersfield. The sheriff's office said it received a report of a possible homicide in the area of Back Canyon Road and Caliente Creek Road. That's where detectives said Cori Cotton, 33, shot and killed another woman during an argument fiver days earlier. The boyfriends of both women were there. Detectives said Cotton also fired shots Goldsberry's boyfriend who got away. Both Cotton and her boyfriend, Bret Stroud, 56, were more than a week after the incident after detectives served a search warrant at the property where the shooting happened. Detectives found the victim's body there in a shallow grave, along with multiple firearms in the residence. Cotton pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. Stroud pleaded not guilty to an accessory charge. The charges were later dropped. The District Attorney's office said it plans to refile the case.

According to the district attorney's office, Robert Henry Dominguez showed up at his estranged wife’s house and took her .9mm handgun and loaded magazine without her permission. Dominguez went to the victim’s trailer located in Delano. The victim was inside of his trailer with his girlfriend. Dominguez walked up to the front of the trailer and called the victim outside. The victim stepped outside where Dominguez shot and killed him. The victim’s girlfriend stepped outside and Dominguez forced her to the ground and threatened to kill her if she cooperated with law enforcement. Dominguez fled the scene and but was later apprehended by law enforcement. He was taken to Delano Regional Medical Center where he later died. Dominguez was sentenced to 105 years to life in prison

Incident: According to court documents, a wheelchair-bound man with cerebral palsy named Nicholas Dean was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Only paramedics were involved in the response. Law enforcement never showed up to locate a crime scene. Several weeks later, an autopsy revealed he was the victim of a homicide and had been strangled. A toxicology report also revealed he was given a non-lethal dose of vicodin and a potentially lethal dose of heroin. Documents state Jessica Dean, Nicholas Dean's sister, was in charge of administering medication to the disabled man. Jessica Dean and her live in boyfriend, Michael Hernandez were Nicholas Dean's care takers and the only people home when he died. Hernandez told investigators he was the last person to see the handicapped man alive. He said he noticed Nicholas Dean needed CPR. He later changed his story and said Jessica Dean choked the man hours before his death. Neither Dean nor Hernandez has been charged. In 2014, Nicholas Dean's biological brother, Jonathan Dean, was murdered, police say by teenage hit-men, who were hired by Nicholas and Jonathan's adoptive father, George Dean. After George Dean was arrested, Jonathan Dean's disabled brother, Nicholas Dean, was placed into the care of his adoptive sister, Jessica Dean.

Incident: Police found Ernesto Venegas laying in the roadway suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The BPD said they believe the shooter fled in a large white van or large white SUV. It happened shortly before kids were walking to school. The body -- covered by a sheet -- was in the intersection in front of Jefferson Elementary School for hours. Police said the accused shooter, Luis Alberto Ortega-Romero, confronted Venegas, who was slashing his tires. The men briefly argued, and when the victim brandished a knife, Ortega-Romero fired several shots, fatally hitting him in the back. Venegas was an accused gang member with an extensive arrest record, including drug, weapons, and domestic violence charges. Ortega-Romero pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter -- and after negotiations in the court, the judge ruled he'd receive 180 days, 500 hours of community service and 3 years of probation. While the case was pending, BPD said Ortega-Romero and his family left the area and were staying with relatives for their safety. Venegas had three children. Family members said he loved spending time with them and was always making jokes.

Incident: Police reports describe Daniel Mckie, 20, as hysterical when he tried to explain how the special needs infant died. Mckie is the mother's boyfriend, but not the biological father of Anakin Mckie, though they share the same last name. According to police reports, when investigators arrived to calls of baby Anakin not breathing -- he was bruised and already dead. The coroner found Anakin had multiple bruises on his face and trauma to his skull and brain. Daniel Mckie changed his story about what happened to Anakin the day he died, many times. Mckie told investigators anakin was fussy, and when he went to check on him he was already stiff and blue. He also said he picked Anakin up out of his crib, tripped over the baby's oxygen machine and fell against the wall. Child protective services investigated a complaint file January 6 regarding Mckie's behavior toward the infant. CPS reports state investigators looked into the complaint and closed the case a month later, with the claims deemed unfounded. Mckie has been charged with first-degree murder.

Investigators say on February 22, the couple argued over revelations Ingram bought the same Valentine's Day gifts for Bowers and another woman he fathered a child with. Bowers is accused of shooting Ingram when he came to her home early that morning to get his belongings. Ingram was known as Chef Ray to many around the community. He recently bought J's Place on Rosedale Highway. Before that, he spent 13 years as the pastry chef at the Petroleum Club. He also spent time as a culinary instructor at Bakersfield College. Whether it was in the kitchen, the classroom or in the community, he left a lasting impression. Colleagues said his enthusiasm for his work was an inspiration. The coroner said he died of a gunshot wound to the neck. Bowers has been charged with murder.

Investigators said they they believe his body was there less than 24 hours.The coroner determined Ballesteros died from multiple gunshot wounds. Friends and family held a vigil at University Park in northeast Bakersfield the weekend after his body was discovered. Friends said Ballesteros had a girlfriend. They described him as a good man with a great heart. Ivan Ruiz was arrested. He was 17 years old when the shooting happened. He has since been charged as an adult.

Incident: A man's body was found with signs of trauma. The body discovered in the 200 block of Baker Street in east Bakersfield. Police said the victim, still not identified by the coroner's office, was an elderly homeless man who appeared to be sleeping on some cardboard, when someone came and shot him several times. Incident: Antonio Garcia was killed by a police officer when the department said Garcia pointed a gun at officers during a pursuit. Garcia was wanted in connection with attempted murder and spousal abuse at the Residence Inn in December 2016. Police said two officers saw a vehicle they believed might be occupied by Garcia. According to BPD, Garcia took off when officers tried to pull him over. He crashed near the intersection of Alta Vista Drive and Niles Place. Police said Garcia got out of the car and pointed a firearm at one of the officers as he ran off. Sometime during the foot pursuit, officer Clifton Ary fired several rounds at Garcia. Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene. Ary has been with the Bakersfield Police Department since 2010. He was cleared in the shooting.

Incident: Arvin police found Jose Joel Salazar's body two days after he was last seen. His body was in his truck. His mother said he left early Wednesday morning in his truck to go meet some friends and they hadn't heard from him since. More than two weeks after Salazar went missing, Arvin police served two search warrants to two separate homes in Arvin in connection to the killing. Javier Lopez, 27, was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory. Police said he was in possession of an AR 15 rifle. Ana Maria Banos, 19, and Jorge Vargas Sosa, 24, were also arrested on suspicion of being an accessory. A 17 teen year old boy, who has not been identified, was arrested nearly a month after Salazar disappeared on suspicion of murder. Police said they seized 16 guns during the arrest. Charges against charges against Lopez, Banos and Sosa were later dropped.

Incident: Tobin Phillips, 20, is accused of killing his girlfriend's baby while she was at work. It happened at the High Mountain Apartment Complex on Cherry Lane in Tehachapi. Just two months earlier, Phillips was arrested in Washington state, accused of abusing his own 21 day old baby while the mother was at work. He was set to go on trial in January. According to court documents, in the latest case, Phillips said he killed the baby because he lost his temper. Phillips described how the baby was crying profusely, and when Phillips was left alone with the baby, he snapped. Phillips told investigators he covered the baby's face with a pillow and sat on him until the baby lost consciousness. The report states Phillips then shook the baby which caused his head to strike a metal bar on a futon, which resulted in large injuries on the baby's face. Philips told investigators after the baby was unconscious for a second time, he put the baby into the bath tub and splashed hot water on him, in an attempt to "shock him awake." The baby's mother found the infant dead and alone in the home with several injuries on his head and neck. Deputies located Phillips two hours after the baby's body was found and arrested him at the Fastrip less than a mile from the apartment. When Phillips made his first appearance in court he had bandages around his neck for unknown reason. Phillips has pleaded not guilty.
