Incident: On Jan. 3, at about 2:25 a.m., Ridgecrest substation deputies responded to the 300 block of Sahara Drive in Ridgecrest to assist the Ridgecrest Police Department on a call involving a suicidal adult male armed with a firearm. During the investigation, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Ridgecrest Police Department and Kern County Sheriff’s Office personnel were involved in the officer-involved shooting. The suspect was struck and was transported to the hospital for treatment. He was later pronounced dead. Kern County Sheriff’s Office detectives have assumed the investigation.

Incident: On Jan. 1, at about 11:52 p.m., officers of the Bakersfield Police Department responded to a report of an assault at Superior Groceries on Union Avenue. Upon arrival officers located an unresponsive adult male, suffering from injuries consistent with a physical assault. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical injury. The initial investigation revealed that the victim was an employee of the business. The victim was physically assaulted by the suspect who had fled the scene, later identified as Demetrius Ford Jr. (29) of Bakersfield. The assault appeared to be due to employees trying to take photographs of Ford’s vehicle after he hit a parked vehicle in the parking lot of the business. On Jan. 2 the adult male victim was pronounced dead.
